The Knappenrast – Experience Mining History at the Foot of the Rax

In the middle of the idyllic park of the Parkhotel Hirschwang lies the Knappenrast – a unique event location that brings the traditional mining history of the Rax region to life. Where miners once worked, rustic coziness now meets modern hospitality.

Die Knappenrast was officially opened at the end of 2025 and is a place for gatherings: for private celebrations, company outings, seminar conclusions, or social weekend meetings. Nestled in one of Austria’s most beautiful recreational areas, it invites visitors to pause, enjoy, and explore.

Culinary history of mining is lovingly captured – with regional delicacies such as miner’s snack, foreman’s pan, or the Barbara cake, as well as the specially brewed “Mine Dwarf”. The ambiance reflects the centuries-old tradition of iron mining that has left a lasting mark on Hirschwang and the entire region.

The Rax region has a long history of mining: From early iron and copper extraction to the heyday under the Innerberg Main Mining Company, up to today’s show mine Grillenberg, which offers visitors an authentic insight into the world underground.

Die Knappenrast is more than an event hut – it is a place where history, nature, and socializing come together.

Arrival

Knappenrast

Arrival by car from the direction of Vienna or Graz: via the A2 South Motorway; at the Seebenstein junction – take the exit for the S6 towards Semmering, Bruck/Mur; exit Gloggnitz; follow the B27 towards Payerbach/Reichenau until you reach Hirschwang. Here you will find Knappenrast in the middle of the park area of Parkhotel Hirschwang.

Parking: Available directly in front of Knappenrast.

From the direction of Vienna or the direction of Graz → SÜDBAHN: hourly connection from Vienna to the railway station ‘Payerbach-Reichenau’.

Please note the latest possible return journey by public transport and check this in advance (e.g. via SCOTTY – the ÖBB route planner for public transport).
